Tomatoes!

Aug. 27th, 2008 | 04:32 pm

I had/have so many of them! Why? I went to Eatwell Farms tomato event and brought home a case...there were dedicated people cooking and canning sauces, making salsas! Molly, the farm manager manning the bloody mary bar is a gal who like me is not into the whole cooking in the field thing. Plus, I would have needed to go out and get a camp stove and real canning pots/gear which wasn't going to happen. So, I went home with tomatoes...she told me to take a lug which sounded like a lot and I didn't have the handy dandy internet to figure out how much in lbs that meant. I looked up when I got home and 1 lug = 30 lbs.

I don't think I have/had a lug, but perhaps half a lug? I've made marinara sauce (I like to roast my tomatoes first which doesn't work as well in the field), tomatoe jam and I am dehydrating a rack of sliced tomatoes. Next off I am going to make another tomatoe jam recipe and hopefully can some to give as presents. I also have a tomato marmalade recipe to try if I am super ambitious and the tomatoes last out.

Once I get into a groove making things I get overly ambitious and somewhat greedy wishing for more tomatoes to try different processes, recipes to be able to taste if there is a difference. It's silly really, but there it is!

In other news I am looking for paid employment...if you know of something  that would suit me please let me know.

busy month. e started a new job with two weeks in shanghai, x's bday, family in town, rem concert.

today, a wave of sadness hit me and I burst into tears. my friend howard passed away in march. his bday was on may 26, and he would have been 37 (year of the pig). someone I talked to at least once a week and often daily. surprisingly a lot after the baby was born since I was up crazy hours and he was on tokoyo then new york time.

this might be the first time I have posted publicly about. mostly, I am still not comfortable talking about publicly since he was so private. I am past being angry that he lied about the status of his health by saying his biopsy was fine, telling me his going half time in tokoyo was so he could study japanese more seriously vs a partial medical leave. I found out about the medical leave part when I went to the memorial at google from his cubemate.

rem concert was good (greek theatre). modest mouse opened, it was a good combo.

Strawberries!

May. 3rd, 2008 | 10:14 pm

Today we went to our CSA's annual strawberry days and picked 8 baskets of strawberries, paying a whopping $4 plus all you can eat strawberres. What am I doing with 8 baskets of strawberries? Making strawberry infused vodkas and strawberry balsamic sauce of course!

Reading L J

Apr. 21st, 2008 | 09:25 am

I'm sporadic about LJ nowadays. When I read a chunk at a time I see the contrast between so much has happened for some folks and so little for others. Most of my journaling seems to be in a log I keep regarding Xander and there is much less introspection.

March-April vacations were in Big Sur and Ixtapa-Zihautanjo, Mexico. Big Sur was a bit challenging since X got hand, foot and mouth disease and was cranky plus he figured out he could climb out of the pack and play. HFMD - not something you really hear about unless you have kids, it's a virus of which there are 20 some odd strains. The virus makes its rounds at playgrounds, daycares, schools and places children congregate several times a year. Sort of like chicken pox in that it's something you inevitably get.

Doing lots of household improvement crap! Looking forward to San Francisco International Film Festival - this Friday "the Golem" with Black Francis playing live new original score. Also. "Go-Go Tales" and "The Art of Negative Thinking" which could be good in a grim sort of way.

Trying to figure out when we're going to China and August plans. No daycare for the last two weeks of the month plus they're spraying in San Francisco so it seems like a good month to not be here. Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing for the most part is miserable in August (think NYC).

mood: calm calm

So much going on it seems like every weekend this month and next is full of events. We're in the land of kid's birthday parties this weekend and my kid isn't even in pre-school or elementary school yet! Been crazy busy between house, work, family and friends plus the whole family has been sick on and off for the past 2 months with the stomach flu, lingering colds and viruses going around. I think we're finally on the mend and feeling better now.

Our turret/office is finally getting some attention. We're having a desk that curves around the bow windows made which will be great . I found a place that makes window rods for bow windows so I can call to get ideas and quotes to see what treatment I want to do. Bookcases for the room were delivered last weekend so we could unpack a bulk of books. Found an outfit in the NW which deals a lot with restorers and period details for homes which has been a big help.

Room by room we're getting stuff in order. One of our friends gave us a great decorating idea which I hope to implement by the end of the year. I feel like we're making good headway - hopefully by February next year things will be pretty much done. It seems to take at least a year to really move in, unpack and get everything in place.

My work is going well enough being a start-up environment. We have a customer and are ramping up more customers going forward. It pays decent for a pt/telecommute job - though I am now going in 1 day a week for meetings. That might change to 2 days a week and they seem to want me to make a greater time commitment and to work permanent. We'll see how those conversations go in the next couple of weeks. I like the job well enough.

X is doing well. Developmentally he is picking up words/language very quickly. E made a list a couple of weeks ago and X could say 30 or so words in English and Cantonese. Since then he seems to know more like 40-45 words in both languages and he is using two words together. His comprehension of course is much greater.

New Mexico Trip Report

Oct. 17th, 2007 | 03:33 pm
mood: content content

Balloon Fiesta was excellent! New Mexico was a lot of fun - we went to the Balloon Fiesta the first part of our trip and the second part of our trip was all about hot springs. Specifically, Ojo Caliente, Stagecoach Hotsprings and 10,000 Waves (really a Japanese style spa). Random list of fun things/recommendations if you happen to go to New Mexico.

Cowgirl BBQ - Santa Fe
Shidoni Scupture Garden - Santa Fe
Tesque Village area - Santa Fe
Overland Sheepskin - Taos
Earthship visitor center  (www.earthship.com)- Taos
Orlandos (Southwest Food) - Taos
Ten thousand waves - Santa Fe
Oasis Internet Cafe (good coffee) - on the road to Sante Fe
Turquoise Trail
Stagecoach hot springs - it's in the SW Hot Spring book - right on the Rio Grande
Rio Grande River

Lots of pictures that will make it eventually to flickr.

This year my birthday dinner was not gourmet, but it was unique. Pork chop on a stick and green chile cheese fries with raspberry lemonade. Dessert = hot fresh mini cinnamon rolls and pinon coffee plus the most amazing fireworks at the balloon fiesta park. Worked for me!

WOOHOO

Xander pee'd in the potty by himself. He came up and indicated he needed to go. I put him on his Baby Bjorn toilet and he pee'd. Lots of praise and congratulations! Called Jen who suggested I get training pants to make it much easier. Guess we're going to be potty training real soon!

Another milestone reached and like a thousand more to go. Something about having a kid makes you appreciate being human and being connected to the human race. It's humbling.

Xander started daycare which went pretty well. Tenative with no crying. It will take 2-3 months till he's developmentally able to appreciate interacting with other kids which I think will be positive. All the other toddlers are 5-9 months older than him and can talk. The daycare provider was really good at understanding his cues and attempts at communication with the sounds/words he knows.

We picked two full days, one day is music and the other will be art in the second half of the semester. Love it that it is a family daycare with the same kids year around for consistency. Meanwhile I have been able to work more effectively and once I get in the routine will be able to work 12-15 hours a week plus do all my errands and go to appointments. This is a relief as I was feeling overwhelmed and tired out working for 1-2 hours during Xander's afternoon nap and trying to get all the household stuff done at the same time.

If I end up picking up more hours at work the solution is probably a nanny 1-2 times a week which I have been on a search for. Being super picky looking for a nanny that speaks Chinese preferably Cantonese dialect. Really liking working and having a job. Totally rules!

Back from mini-vacation

Aug. 13th, 2007 | 04:03 pm
mood: chipper chipper

Back from Palm Springs where we had a blast! It was hot hot hot...spent a lot of time in the pool, drinking yummy drinks and hanging out with awesome folks. Went to the Parker Saturday night for drinks, toured the grounds and played some ping pong. Definitely might be a place we'll go back and stay at with some other folks.

We brunched at the JW Marriot Desert Springs which is a testament to man made/man over nature aka eco diaster complex. Giant lake (complete with a boat/gondola tour of the ground stopping at the different restaurants), waterways and golf course in the middle of the desert.

It was of course too short and want to go back.

Breaking

Every have one of those weeks/days where a bunch of stuff breaks?

1) Left rear wheel on Cielo stroller inexplicably is now starting to fall off (this is the second one - Mia Moda sent us this one because the first one we bought had a manufacturing defect that caused it not to fold).
2) Vacuum cleaner belt broke while our housecleaner was using it, put on a new belt and the belt shredded
3) Diaper cover rivet falls off

Omens or just plain bad luck?

Sadly on one of the mom lists I am on another mom had to be talked to because they felt she was too harsh. She left the list which is sad because while she was harsh she also had a wealth of information. I find it disheartening that so many mom groups and lists are so whiny at times.

Starting to put together share care so that folks can have a night out. Hoping it will work out reasonably well.

Quandry

When we last moved I posted to chix list I am on about getting help packing. A woman who was out of work answered. We are still unpacking and last weekend we decided to open a box with a wine decanter my brother had given us. Lo and behold there was no decanter inside, the box was filled with some items that were on our dining room table.

We had not opened the box with the wine decanter since we got it as a gift so we were very surprised. I used gmail chat to contact the woman who helped. She responded to my "hi" and when I asked her if she might have unpacked the decanter or know where the decanter would be packed I got no reply for an hour, but her status has changed 3 times. Seems like she is ignoring me and my question which I find odd. I do know the woman has mental health issues that she takes meds for and it could be a bunch of different things going on for her.

We've looked through all the boxes where it might be and have not found the decanter. My goal is to find out what happened to the wine decanter and of course recover it from where ever it might be. The gift was from my brother and holds a lot of sentimental value and it is valuable. What would you do?

Hrm looks like we're going to go on vacation for a week the week after I start working. Since I will be telecommuting I imagine it will be okay. We're looking at going to La Jolla (family) and taking a side trip to Baja for a few days. Good thing we got X his passport already and we're pretty much good to go.

This weekend we went to a wedding for two lovely lovely bad bad people we know. I had gone up to the same area last month for a bachelorette party for the bride. Both events were awesome at bringing together community and people working together. We stayed the weekend at a resort and the area that we were in was a mini-community of parents and kids. Still catching up on some sleep so excuse the rambling jumble grammar post.

I got to meet a few people I only knew through a parent's list I am on.  I had been following one woman's post in particular because she was speaking to her boys in French as I am trying with to do with X. I tried to convince the kids to help pick up on Sunday morning, but I haven't got the firm discipline technique down. Uke gave me some tips which I am going to try to implement when X is age appropriate. I hope I don't totally wimp out because that is a bad bad path to go down.

First steps or four...

Jun. 5th, 2007 | 09:21 am
location: home
mood: jubilant jubilant

Xander took his first steps or four rather this morning. Sadly, no camera or cell phone handy to document. It was just after E left for work...

Xander was blowing in his kazoo (thank you Alicia), when he looked over to me with kazoo in hand. He stretched his arm with kazoo in hand  towards me. I stretched my arm  to get the kazoo but there was a space of 5-6 ft between us.  He took four steps to shorten the space and I leaned over to take the kazoo from him. He was completely non-plussed by the steps, stooped down and started crawling again.

What a milestone!

Happy Birthday Xander!

May. 20th, 2007 | 09:43 pm
mood: jubilant jubilant

We had a nice gathering to celebrate Xander's first birthday! My mom and E's mom and dad came into town for the event along with my two brothers who live in California and their families. It's been hectic organizing, planning and cooking for the event!

In case you are interested I went with a banana cake with lemon buttercream frosting.
